Carol White has lived in Ireland for 34 years. Analogue collage has been her medium of choice since the 1960’s. Having grown up in museums from childhood and having spent years teaching art history – she breathes alternate lives into familiar art historical faces - often playing with time.
Rembrandt’s women and men are among the subjects of White’s paper tableaux. The collage’s color smacks of glossy contemporary magazines merged with historical fabrics in print, vintage ephemera, birds and animal illustrations. The images, often dreamlike, “crawl on their bellies”, humorously weaving stories from piles of randomly collected paper. Working with no preconceived ideas, White composes pictures from simple materials sourced from newspapers, magazines, off-cuts of previously cut figures and landscapes. She’s affected by world news, the realities of ageing, weather, family relationships, art history and film. Her work has been shown in Ireland, USA, Poland, Germany, UK, Portugal, etc. Her collage is included in private collections in the USA, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, France, Kanyer Art Collection, etc.. Born in NJ, USA, her work often includes blimps, taking passengers “home”.
