The exhibition aims to showcase a broad spectrum of collage techniques used by artists working in book art, zines, and visual poetry. It introduces the audience to the work of artists from around the world – from Japan, through Germany and Portugal, to Latin America. A diverse range of personalities is represented, drawing from a rich array of influences: from local artistic traditions, through Dadaist experiments in the spirit of Kurt Schwitters, to contemporary independent publications in grunge style.

Nearly 200 objects will be displayed in the over 500-square-meter space of the BUW Gallery, including original, hand-crafted collages, art zines, art books, and digital collages.

The Adhesions exhibition of collage in book art and art zines marks the culmination of the “Artists in the Library” series, conducted by the University of Warsaw Library during its 25th anniversary celebrations in Powiśle. Simultaneously, it reflects our aspirations to establish a future biennial event dedicated to book art and other art forms that combine the written word with visual art. Art books, particularly art zines, represent a phenomenon that often escapes the standard library perspective. Perhaps, as communication increasingly shifts into the digital realm, it may lead to a renewed appreciation for the tangible nature of books and other publications, expressed through artistic creations – whether as art books developed within the curriculum of art schools or as underground, countercultural zines. This is a phenomenon that libraries should closely follow.
