Fumio Tomita – exhibition in Retroavangarda Gallery

From November 22nd until the end of December 2018 Retroavangarda Gallery in Jerozolimskie Business Park will be exhibiting graphics by the splendid Japanese artists Fumio Tomita. Tomita’s artworks can be found in the collections of world-famous museums but in Poland his art is yet to be known. The exhibition in Retroavangarda Gallery is the first presentation of his pieces in this country on such scale.

Fumio (Humio) Tomita was born in 1934. In 1957 graduated at the Kagoshima University of Art in Japan, and after his graduation he received many awards, and he exhibited at numerous exhibitions at home and especially abroad. Tomita is a member of Japan Print Association.

Tomita’s graphics stand out due to their sense of form, bold, vibrant color choices and precise execution. Big, asymmetrical plains are set in contrast with elaborate and precise detail. Although the pieces bear some resemblance to the 60s geometric style, including op-art, Tomita’s artworks remain thoroughly original, unique and their futuristic vibe perfectly compliments modern interiors.

All graphics presented at the exhibition belong to the collection of Dariusz Wilicki and Karolina Kaja Kant.

Francis Blakemore wrote in his book “Who’s Who in Modern Japanese Prints” about Fumio Tomita: “Skillfully and with great precision, he employs silkscreen to best advantage, producing large, intensely colorful prints. Bold shapes are dominated by circles containing as many as six or seven strong colors that both harmonize and clash, igniting a conflict between form and intense  coloration that unifies the work rather than disintegrates it”.
