Michał Batory is one of the most appreciated poster artists in the world. He studied at Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, but for many years now he has been living and working in Paris. His art was even exhibited in Louvre, making him the second Pole in history presented in that gallery. Not everyone knows, however, that apart from posters he also designs great book covers and is a photographer. Since today in Warsaw there is a chance to see his book covers at the exhibition at University of Warsaw Library (BUW)
You can find there the original versions of such famous publications as Paolo Coelho’s “Eleven Minutes” or “The Alchemist”. There are also real objects, which constituted the main motifs of these covers. Thanks to them it is easier to imagine how the artist worked. Michał Batory, as he says himself, treats book covers like posters. For him, a cover is a symbol, a sign and a synthesis of the book’s content. Apart from 1:1 projects, the exhibition in BUW features also enlarged covers, as 120x180cm citylights, which really do look like posters. The exhibition closes on 18th May, I strongly encourage you to see it:
